I’ve previously mentioned two “must have” books for Small Businesses and Managed Service Providers (MSP’s) -
- The Managed Service Provider “Bible” – The E-Myth Revisited
- Mastering the Rockefeller Habits – Advice for increasing the value of your IT business
There is a third book that I find myself recommending to others all the time, and one that I’ve used the advice from within my own businesses to great success – The Referral Engine by John Jantsch.
Get your customers to market for you
Subtitled “Teaching your business to market itself” the book is a very easy but powerful read with actionable ideas on how to get your customers to undertake your best marketing for you.
Word of mouth referrals are what most small business owners (including the majority of IT Solution Providers and MSP’s that I speak to) swear by for growing their business. Referrals nearly always successfully trump any other type of business you might come across, but most people sit back and wait for referrals to fall into their laps.
The Referral Engine encourages you to educate your customers, and to talk to them rather than at them. It gives practical techniques for creating a steady flow of new customers through referrals.
Conclusion
So, if you’re a small business, IT Solution Provider or MSP looking to grow your sales – I’d highly recommend you making the time to read The Referral Engine.

Another great book for MSPs to read is “Endless Referrals” by Bob Burg. Highly recommend this one for those who struggle with B2B networking.

MSP Marketing Coach
Stuart – great suggestion. I’m a big fan of Bob Burg’s books and other work. “The Go-Giver” and “Endless Referrals” are two great examples of Mr. Burg at his best!
Thanks for the shout out Richard and as Stuart suggested above Bob Burg’s book is a good one too.
Thanks John. Appreciate the comment, and keep up the *great* content with your blog and podcast!
